What Do You Think Dancing in the "Spirit" Was? |
Lead | |
|
In the church I attended people were always dancing in the "spirit". They seemed to be overcome by something that seemed to be a "supernatural
force" which they referred to as the holy spirit and it seemed to take "control" of them. I have seen little old ladies that could barely walk
do "jig like" dances that lasted 5 mins. How would you explain this?

Same as all the other so-called manifestations. Music, suggestion, excitement, conscious dancing, etc. lead to trance-like states that lead to what seems to be
uncontrollable behaviors, strange feelings, etc. There have been studies on the psychology of ecstatic worship. Nothing supernatural about it.

Honestly my guess would be Choreomania...basically the same thing as the dancing manias of the middle ages, except brought on by the environment, suggestion,
etc.
Funny how as with speaking in tongues (Glossolalia) a lot of these things that happen "in the spirit" also happen "in the DSM-IV" except that they don't have such flattering or spiritual sounding names in the book people use to diagnose the crazy. |

I saw a lady about 80 yrs. of age who could barely walk and when she would go through the "prayer" line she would "do a jig like dance"
that lasted about 5 mins. Has anyone ever seen this before and how would you explain it?

I don't remember ever dancing in the Spirit, but I will be quick to add it to the other unbiblical experiences of slain in the spirit and drunk with the
spirit. My girlfriend was told by a "prophet" that she'd be more powerful if she danced in church. Seemed kind of freaky the way she danced in
this one service we went to where poeple fell over and could not get up and were injured and the speaker was claiming God told him to punch a sick person in
order to deliver healing. Sadly, my girlfriend has no spiritual discernment....punching a person is the word of the Lord to her. She'll walk out on a bad
movie, but when it comes to unbiblical spiritual experiences, she will get right in and shout amen. What to do?!?!

In my former church there were several types/styles of dance:
1. The Loco-Motion: the person stomps their feet then moves their arms like they are doing the locomotion 2. The Twist: the person gyrates their hips to a song with an upbeat tempo 3. The Worm: the person lays on the ground and shakes uncontrollably 4. The Whirlygig: the person just spins in circles oblivious to their surroundings My favorite explanation for why my aunt danced in the spirit was because before she was saved she used to go to dance clubs. Once saved God gave her the gift of dancing in the Spirit so she would not be tempted to return to a dance hall. If anyone else has any more dance styles please feel free to add to the list. |

I didn't see much of this type of dancing, but I've heard about it and read various reports.

This is the funniest dancing in the spirit I've ever seen! Some of the comments are hilarious.

You know, my parakeets do that exact same side-to-side maneuver on their perches. I had no idea they were spirit filled!
And I see Danish pente music is just as bad as American pente music. |

Hey Geoffrey -- I have most of those in my fitness video library!!!!
I never did "dancing in the Spirit" .... but plenty of moving and grooving to the music. Like I said, my upbringing was just normal enough that a few of the other mothers thought mine was an utter reprobate (and me too by extension) because of that normalcy. I went to school dances, and that's where I did my hip-shaking.... NOT in church. Had I done my dancing in church though, it wouldn't have been quite as bad as Elaine's from Seinfeld, but not nearly as graceful as a Maria Tallchief .... or quite as bold as Josephine Baker's. It could best be described as "Silly 80s Teen Dance." Now, some of my other personal favorites that I saw included (1) the Fast Woodstock Jerk -- similar to the "hippie-style" dancing you might see at Woodstock, but faster and not as graceful; (2) Running Man -- just as it sounds; and (3) Modified Clogging -- I suspect these people knew how to clog (sort of an Appalachian version of the Irish step dancing) and just used the same moves. Of course, having grown up in the 80s, I'm surprised there wasn't a teen movement: Breakdancing in the Spirit. |
