We belonged to a Gospel singing group several years back... singing Fisherfolk type songs. I ran the sound board and sometimes sang with the others. We went to Episcopal, Methodist, and even a Catholic church one time.

Towards the end (before a big blowup and the group leaving their home parish)- the leader of the group decided that we had to change our song order to match the latest AoG style- having a worship song followed by a fun song followed by a worship song- back and forth. Our previous structure was starting out with light, fun songs, and then going more and more towards thoughtful, worship type songs, and ending with something light and funny (such as Jesus Loves me.)

We went from having people appreciate us coming to, shall I say, not being so welcome? I felt that that "jumping around" confused and irritated people- I know it did me.

I think there are styles in that "church"- and people slavishly try to follow the latest "style" rather than finding what works for them. Oh, and I don't listen to any type of "Gospel" music any more, so I couldn't tell you if the singers sounded alike or not- but I'd bet that like what we saw, they slavishly try to follow the latest accepted "style" and thus may indeed sound alike.
