You're not telling us anything we don't know, Jona. What are your intentions here, really? Why would you think we wouldn't know basic things about anthropology, psychology, and all that?My manner of writing may be a bit rough, but I used to own a copy of the DSM-IV I know about aphasia and glossolalia in the psychological context.I've seen it in the Pentecostal religious context, and read of it existing in others. However, Glossolalia is something we here associate with the Pentecostal religion. Thus, we don't care too much weather or not you defend it in some other context...Speaking of all this talk about Ecstatic trance states and stuff...my roommate is Native American...so I know about other means of achieving trance states just from what he's mentioned about Native cultural practices.
I have a friend who is a Sufi Muslim and the brother of a Palestinian Christian I used to know, I have spoken at great length with him and witnessed the Sufis dancing and chanting la-ilaha illa Allah, wa Muhammad Rasulallah for long periods of time to induce a trance state which they believe brings loving communion with God.
I have in the past studied the Bible...and their own book, the Piby...with Rastafarians in Jamaica and here in the states and I 'took the chalice' as they call it. You wanna start a discussion on the religious and cultural practices of different groups...fine...but you're going to need more then some Wikipedia articles to back up your statements with this crowd.I will absolutely not close this thread, unless my boss tells me to, or unless Bea asks me to. You bring your ideas to the table, you take the chance that they will be challenged. I've been watching things very closely since I got up this morning to find Charliedog's thread...and I say that making assertions and expecting them not to be challenged...indeed quite possibly expecting a pat on the back for them...is something I've observed as typical Pentecostal behavior and your attempts to defend Glossolalia in an "anthropological" sense do strike me as a TOS violation. You might not be defending Pentecostalism directly...but you're behaving like a Pentecostal and defending Glossolalia. That's otherwise known as "Speaking In Tongues" and defense of Pentecostal practices no matter how indirect (or weather or not one believes it's supernatural) is explicitly a violation of the terms of service. I am beginning to agree with Charliedog, and in my capacity as moderator I'm going to warn you...do not defend practices associated with Pentecostal Christianity. That is against the rules no matter how creatively you go about it. The least that will happen is other members will get angry with you, or you may be banned. You also strike me as someone who's trying to "help" us or "save" us...well I for one had to go it alone for most of finding my spiritual path, with no help and people actively attempting to hinder my progress and seduce me into Pentecostalism...so I sure don't need your help now, years later. You aren't helping anything with your current overzealous (in whatever-it-is) behavior.
