'God's going to break you but only because he loves you'
Ugh I heard that one too many times. Why does he need to break me if I follow him out of my own free will?...
...It definently annoys me that I took the "broken" concept so seriously. I have pretty much zilch self-confidence b/c I was taught that I couldn't think for myself. Grr. image
And where in the Bible does it say that God demonstrates love by doing negative things to people? What possible benefit is it to God if someone is "broken"? To me it implies that they are going to have greater difficulty functioning (due to excess anxiety, less self esteem, etc). What POSSIBLE good is it to God for someone to function more poorly? Why would a "broken" person be a better witness for him?

And why WOULD God need to "break" you if you had already chosen to follow him of your own free will? Good question!

And why would God care if we think for ourselves? Isn't that why he gave us a brain? So that we could think for ourselves? Why would someone who is omnipotent be threatened by our thoughts and questions?

To me, the only answer that makes any sense is that it isn't God who wants people to be broken so that they are more easily managed. On the other hand, there might be some PEOPLE who would benefit from that scenario.
