That is Calvinism and the ideology of the "elect".
Well, I would hope not, although I'm sure Calvinists can be morons from time to time.

We do believe in predestination. I've never heard anyone suggest that we should threaten our kids with hell. In fact, we would be horrified by that. We practice infant baptism, which implies that we believe that our children are blessed by God and under His grace. And I do not believe I have ever heard anyone say that wealth is a sign of God's favor (except in Pentecostal and WOF churches). In fact, bad luck generally gets pinned on God a little TOO much at my church, if you ask me. I get a kick out of it sometimes. "In God's providence, it rained on our picnic day" and "In God's providence, Fred dropped the camera and it broke." Sort of the Calvinist version of "+!*$ happens". I mean, God gets the credit for good stuff, too, so it's not like we think He's evil--sort of like (and just explaining here, hope this isn't offensive) that God has an overall plan that is good, but that doesn't mean that we can see the good in it at the moment or understand exactly why things happen the way that they do, so we just roll with the punches and enjoy the good times.

But, for example, when I started getting really ill and freaked out that everyone would think God was judging me, everyone just seemed surprised that I would even think of that. "If, in God's providence, this is the way things are, then we should build a better wheelchair ramp," they said.

The Puritans were a weird bunch, though. I've heard that they were oddballs in many ways.
