I was asked to put on a play by an organization called "Christian Impact" in their centre, just off Oxford Street in the centre of London. Most actors aren't rich and so for them to give of their time for free, is a considerable sacrifice, but they did it. The nasty attitudes towards them from the "Impacters" had me apologizing endlessly to them. The lack of respect and the put downs and the sneering, and I chose the actors with care. They were all Christians.
Anyway, we were invited to a function with various posh members of the general synod and whatever. We were standing in the little reception area, just before we were due to go into the main room, and there would be about 75 people and this "impact" woman got up and announced that it was time to go in. But how did she announce it?
"Ladies and gentlemen and ....." And then she said my name. As if I was neither a lady nor a gentleman...
She did it to humiliate me in front of all the people. For no reason at all. What was I ? A twenty five year old theatre director and actor with impressive credits for my age, doing a favour for "Christian Impact" and losing money, and persuading others to lose money, because we gave of our time for free.
And this woman, (who doubtless had a husband who paid for everything) sneered in public.
The actors were like, ok fEck this...lets go...we won't do the play. But in the end I said, "we've rehearsed it, so whatever..let's go for it and enjoy it"
The performance was ok, and people donated money instead of buying tickets and the place held about 1000 people on the four nights that we performed. If each gave a pound, (and plenty gave more) then Christian Impact would have walked away with quite a profit. I had told the actors that it was a profit-share, but guess what. Did Christian Impact TELL us the exact sum of money that came in so we could share the profit? No. They gave us £40 each for the entire project and there were seven of us.
So on top of insulting me, who had done them a favour, they swindled us. Quite an "impact" I am sure you will agree.
To make it worse, the woman behind all the swindling, turns up on religious "talks" on Radio Four all the bl00dy time and the sound of her voice makes me feel really angry, because I know that she has no right to take any sort of moral high ground at all.
