The story of Abraham and his willingness to sacrafice his son has always bothered me. It's only been in the last few years that I have wondered if we have made a great mistake in how we viewed this story.

I believe that Abraham failed God's test in a major way. Was God asking Abraham to really sacrafice his son, or giving Abraham the chance to grow beyond the actions of people during bible times who would sacrafice their children to false gods. Should Abraham have told God no?

Or was God asking Abraham to simply dedicate Issac's life to God's service much as some parents do in church today? This is the premise of one Rabbi:
