Yeah, Conserv, I hear ya. As I've said before, these people are why I continue to own guns, even though I haven't hunted since 1999.
Shoot, as agressive as the Pentes I knew could be...I was always on guard after me and the ex split up in '01. One day my ex decided to start stalking me, leaving little reminders (little fake flowers from our wedding stuff, etc.) around the college campus and following me around...leaving letters/notes for me at the dorm desk. Her female church friends were calling me, like, several times a day, too. She got a male friend who was an assistant pastor at a Pente church to come along to act as a "counselor" mostly all he did was glare at me, while trying to appear threatening. As I wasn't taking the bait and talking to them. They did get in my way once, all I said was "Excuse me" and he got in my face and called me a child of the devil along with a few other choice words. My ex started pestering my instructors before my classes...and asking fellow students where I was, too. Then the college administration stepped in, threatened to expel her and banned her from the dorms. (Her buddy got banned from campus altogether) City PD and the Sheriff's dept. were called, and she got threatened with stalking charges and probation violations. (She was on probation for larceny. She cashed a check for $10,000 that was erroneously made out to her and blew through the money in a day or so, all before she met me.)
What was funny was that the stalking scare ended up causing my ex to lose her apartment. City PD went to talk to her, and guess what? The building wasn't up to code...not only her but everyone in the apartments she lived in had to find a new place to live...and since she was the cause, the landlord wouldn't just set her up in another building he owned and she ended up in a shelter. (Where she later got kicked out for stealing, you guessed it, money.) What was even funnier was that her one friend that helped her out with her um...plan...had a bench warrant for unpaid child support (he didn't have a real job) and violating a restraining order against HIS ex wife and he ended up in jail. I decided not to go through the hoops to get a restraining order in favor of a more informal arrangement with the local cops.
After this, I kept my M9 Beretta handgun in my car for over a year...as this was while I was going to college. I made sure the college administration and local/state/tribal police and sheriff's deputies were aware of my situation. As long as I followed the law RE: transporting firearms and kept it in the trunk with the bullets/clips in the glove compartment they all quietly agreed to look the other way. It wasn't much, but at least I had means to defend myself within reasonable reach.
Aside from a minor thaw in the fall for a couple weeks, this little cold war between me and the ex plus a couple of the local Pente churches continued for almost a year. I got threats, I got my email hacked twice, shoot, a girlfriend of mine got threatened...badly enough by a bunch of women. Once the divorce was final, it mostly stopped though things got creepy a couple times after that.
Eventually I decided to move a couple hundred miles away and not tell any but a few trusted friends where I went.
