I can't speak to the bark-like-a-dog kind of stage hypnotism, but I've been exploring hypnotherapy as a way to manage physical pain. So far, the hypnotic trances I've experienced under the guidance of a clinical hypnotherapist have been MUCH less extreme and MUCH more organic-feeling than the altered states of consciousness I experienced in the p/c setting. I don't lose time, thought, or my sense of self while hypnotized, the way I did during "anointed" worship services or altar calls. I suspect "physical manifestations" like being "slain in the spirit" are caused by that emotional euphoria state (which is closer to sexual fervor than anything else) reached through hypnotic trance, rather than caused by the hypnotism itself.

Of course, that suspicion is based off my own experience with both, and I've only done the hypnotherapy thing as an adult, with my defenses up and my brain purposefully engaged. So y'know, just my two cents.
