Yes, it was out there back then. In fact, in the Corinthian church, those that wanted the "prestige" of a tongue talker would speak glossolalia, a practice carried over from many of the ancient false religions back then. As far as African Traditional Religions, that wouldn't surprise me. C. F. Parham's group "reported" speaking known earthly languages, although when missionaries went overseas to deliver the gospel, nothing was understood. William J. Seymour, a minister under Parham and a black man, would take these teachings to 312 Azuza Street and the rest is history. What I didn't know was that there was an "interpret for hire" scam going on back then. I might want to look into that.
