Weird question ... does anyone know how my former UPCI pastor may have suddenly appeared on my Facebook friend suggestions list?

As best I know, Facebook gives you friend suggestions based on having friends in common. For example, if I am friends with Anne and Betty, and Anne and Betty are both friends with Charlotte, then Facebook assumes I might know Charlotte and might want to add her to my friends list.

Today suddenly, there my old pastor is in my friends suggestion box. I went through his friends and mine with a fine-tooth comb, and we don't have any friends in common. I haven't seen him for probably 20 years.

How did Facebook know that I knew him?

PS He has not requested to 'friend' me, it is just in the automatically generated 'Friends Suggestion' list. At least, I think it's automatically generated ...

Facebook is a social networking site. You can add friends, upload pics, leave each other littlle notes, etc.

Well, I don't know how he ended up on there. But I think I need a crucifix and some holy water. I'm going to hold up a mirror to the computer to see if his photo has a reflection ...

If it was listed as a friend request in the top right hand corner which you have to click on to see who it is, then he found you and requested to be your friend. If on the other hand you could see his pic in the area where it says, "Suggestions" then it's gawd messing with ya.

If that's the case, I think the whole mirror idea should help clarify things.

If he had no reflection...per the vampire mythos...it would not have been possible to take a picture of him.

On the other hand, demons have reflections according to most of the mythology...crucifix and holy water...good idea.

not yet.....she is still trying to be a Christian. I am afraid the board might be a little too much for her right now. Tim- you know how much I despise pentes, so I have forced myself to take a very restrained approach with her. (I would hate to scare her back to them) The UPCI is actually the first church she ever attended, which she did not start until adulthood. She married my uncle who like me was born into pente. However, he grew a beard a few months ago and is not too friendly to the pentes anymore. They had a sweet in-ground pool installed a few months back, so you know they are drifting away from penteville very slowly.

You should tell her that she can hit 'ignore', or simply unfriend the former pastor's wife. She can exclude folks from her Facebook if she wants.

My sister is friends with a former youth pastor, on Facebook. One time I got an invite from him. I turned it down. Yeah, if you have family members on your friendlist, you will probally get noticed by people from your former church. I just feel that if I were to add one pastor I had, growing up, I'd have to look up and add all of the pastors I've ever known. Eventhough I did add this one girl I knew when I went to this particular church, and I accepted an add on from a girl from the church my family currently attends too.

Wow, Marla - I sooooo wouldn't want anyone from my former p/c days to be "spying" on me (which is how it would feel if it was me)! Unless I am still friends with them IRL, I don't want them to have anything to do with my new life. Is that weird?

I mean, every time I have bumped into someone from my p/c days on the street, they have preached at me, not listened to what I said, offered some sort of Bible study / new course / faith-saving strategy, talked non-stop about the amazing things God is doing, and ended by saying, "well we all have our ups and downs, faith is a journey and you'll come out the other side if you just learn to trust God" - despite me saying how much happier I am without religion and that I'm not interested any more in all that. It used to make me mad, but the last time it happened I just laughed at how this woman had not taken in a word I'd said! I was seriously embarrassed for her. I bet she went away thinking she'd done an amazing service for God that day. :rolleyes:

Thanks, sandray, that was very helpful. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that has gotten freaked out by that. IMHO, Facebook needs to stop trying to be quite that clever.

If we don't have any friends in common, there's probably a reason, y'know?

scribe ... yes, it does feel very much like spying. I'm not even sure if it was intentional or not on the part of my former pastor, but I sure wouldn't be surprised. Maybe he felt 'led' or something... ugh.

Last night I saw a new application on Facebook, "What type of Pentecostal are you?" Thw lady who used it got the answer of "Pew Jumper." Just when I thought I had seen everything.

U know what u should do get rid of ur facebook and get a myspace becase upcers are not suppose to have those but a face book is ok. At least that way it worked when some I knew went to bible colledge. No joke
