Ahh, gophers. I'm from Florida and was always thrilled to see one. They're one of my favorite animals. Here's a link about them with pics. They
basically look like small versions of those giant Galapagos turtles. They're protected legally. I once found one in the Burger King parking lot. Hubby and
I spent 20 minutes moving that turtle into the woods next to the parking lot only to have it amble right back down into the lot. We finally put it in the back
of the truck and hauled it further into the woods. Poor fella, for all we know he was late for a hot date! I just hope he stayed off the lot.
They also tend to cross roads at a turtle's pace, and you see a lot of squashed ones beside the roads. When I worked at the vet's we repaired quite a few shells with some type of modeling cement and fiberglass mesh.
