When I was first exposed to pentecostalism, I was attending a non-denominational, fundamental church. Their worship style was very simple - a few contemporary praise songs followed by a expository teaching on a specific passage. It was solid, healthy and at times I found it somewhat boring. I was also finding it very difficult to concentrate on the teachings, my mind would wander.At the time, I was also involved in a para-church organization helping me to deal with some issues in my life. The host church and the leaders of the group were A/G.

I attended a Promise Keepers event which was hosted by another A/G church and found the worship to be exciting and moving. The following Sunday, I visited the A/G church. The pastor was preaching a series from the Old Testament on the temple which I thought was interesting. The people there were open and friendly. The worship was exciting and I was ready for a change.

It was mainly the worship that hooked me initially. As someone else mentioned, this was also one of the things which eventually drove me out. Too loud, a lack of order in the worship and too many people bouncing up and down. (I liked to call it pogo-stick praise and I admit I particpated.) I find it very wierd how I craved excitement and vitality in worship. I guess I got too much of what I wanted.

There were other reasons also. Although my wife and I were married in the A/G church, they gave us such a hard time about getting married. (They questioned whether it was God's will for us to be married.) It left us with bad feelings.
