I don't think I could torture myself by sitting through an hour of this.........

The TRUTH can be dealt with; but a lie cannot.

You guys understand I'm talking about a movie about a movie, right? The Pente pastor's movie isn't made yet (if it ever will be). I'm
talking about the documentary about it. But yeah, I can see how that might be hard to stomach, for some.
Now, the film that God told that pastor to make, that's another story. If it ever sees light of day, I bet it'll be on par with, or worse than, Plan Nine From Outer Space. I'd see it, in the so-bad-it's-good category.

More info on the documentary at audienceofonemovie.com, if
you're interested. There's going to be a small theatrical release and a DVD in the Spring. Oh, and showings on the Sundance Channel. One way or
another, I'll see it!

Definitely check out the trailer. The pastor/director says:
"I wanna do something like the Titanic. It either sinks, and it's, like, the biggest flop you ever saw in your life, or it sails, and it just blows everybody's mind." I think that probably reflects the level of deep thought that lies at the core of the project. Absolutely a must-see documentary.

I suspect it would blow my mind alright but not in a good way. What never ceases to amaze me about christians supposedly being led by God himself to create
movies or music or whatever is if it's true God is behind it then He's got incredibly bad taste.
Not that I believe He's behind it at all. |

You hit the nail on the head that time, tandc90!
It's the same old tired thinking, isn't it? If the movie the documentary is about actually gets produced and released, and creates a huge amount of buzz, then God wanted it to happen. If it "sinks like the Titanic," then God wanted that to happen, instead. So, taking the (I hate to use the word in this case, but...) logic to the next step, then I suppose it follows that if the writing is sophomoric, the directing is amateurish and the performances are uninspired and unbelievable, then God wanted all of that, as well. This line of thinking has God responsible for everything, and human beings responsible only for doing what God tells them to do, only no one knows what that is, exactly, except the guy on top. Ironically, of course, he says he wants to "do something like the Titanic." The Titanic sank to the bottom of the sea, because of human pride and foolishness. Rob |

This really made me laugh. Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I've heard someone claim that God was inspiring them to make a movie .... In fact, some
of my Pentecostal family members were into that.
One of the most obnoxious things on the trailer is when the woman says that it is certainly God because they haven't yet been kicked out of the recording studio, despite not paying rent for five months. I guess in her mind 'God' enables people to break contracts and cheat people out of money. Because, after all, what is REALLY important is that some weird sci-fi film with bad acting and stupid lines gets made--so who care who we rip off along the way? |

marla191792 wrote:That reminds me of a story. (Doesn't everything?) My wife, our 4 kids and I were hip-deep into the AOG church, and living in Spokane, Washington. I was working two jobs just to make ends meet, which of course, included having our oldest in Christian school. One day while I was at work, my mother came to visit. Picture mom: Just a pinch above 5 feet tall, Jewish, born and raised in a Yiddish-speaking neighborhood in the Bronx. She's sitting in the living room with my wife, and looks around at the furnishings (comfortable, in a modest sort of way), and says: "You seem to be doing very well!" To which my wife replies, with a beatific glance toward the ceiling, "Oh yes, the Lord provides everything we need." My mother, being very pragmatic, but also not wanting to stir up trouble, gives my wife an enigmatic look, but says nothing. Years later, after I had left the church (and the religion), Mom told me what she was thinking at the time. (Spoken with a Bronx, Yiddish inflection): "The Lord provides? The Lord provides? It's my son Robert who provides! He has to work two jobs to pay the bills!" Rob
