I wondered if any of you experienced Pentecostals who believed witches or Satanists were out there to get them, and suspected others of being witches? This seems to be fueled by the worldview of battling Satan and demons. I found in Pentecostalism, belief in witchcraft is common because it is a way to explain bad things that happen, & demonize with the "witch" label someone we don't like. I was part of a Pentecostal church in the past that did witch hunts as a control mechanism to ostracize those who disagreed with the church's leaders. The pastors would label women as witches or say they were possessed by an evil spirit of Jezebel or Delilah so people wouldn't listen to their complaints about the pastors. Like the Salem trials, this arose from church conflict. There was a preoccupation with witches and satanism in the Pentecostal world at the time because of a hysteria caused by the "Satanic Panic" brought on by some authors and speakers like Mike Warnke, John Todd, & Lauren Stratford claiming to be ex-witches and telling churches that there was a nationwide network of witches kidnapping kids for sacrifices and SRA (Satanic Ritual Abuse). Their claims were later investigated and debunked as false. Some conspiracy theorists label people as part of the evil Illuminati which is a similar broad brush to McCarthyism & other witch hunts. I think most witch hunts, be they in tribal cultures or contemporary cultures, tend to label as witches those they have conflict with or want to discredit.
