In the UPC church I was involved in, the Pastor preached against the celebration of Christmas claiming it was heathen and a sin and tried to back this teaching up with the verse in Jeremiah 10:1-5, which he claimed was talking about a Christmas tree. So based on this assumption, he declared Christmas a "sin" and did not permit anyone in his congregation to celebrate it. And, to make sure that none of us did, he forced all of us, including children ( except kids under a certain age which I can't remember) to pray and fast for 3 days every year - Christmas eve, Christmas day and Boxing day. During those 3 days we had 3 services per day with a visiting preacher preaching at us. It was compulsory and if the Pastor found out you were eating, you were openly shamed and called a backslider or not very spiritual and needed to repent at an altar. My parents never saw me at Christmas for about 20 years. It was destructive to our family. I used to start having panic attacks every year around Oct in anticipation of the fights and upset that this would cause. And it broke my mothers heart to not have her daughter, son in law and 1st grandchild with them. I am so glad that we were able to spend 2 Christmases with her before she died.
Was anyone else forced into such damaging behavior ?
